A Short History of Henna in Rajasthan

Sayal Henna - sojat-workshop

Henna has coloured hands, hair and celebrations across India for centuries — and Rajasthan became the heart of its cultivation and trade.

A crop shaped by the desert

Henna thrives where many crops fail: hot, arid districts of western Rajasthan. Over generations, farmers in Marwar and the Pali district made henna a dependable cash crop alongside guar and bajra.

Sojat becomes the hub

The town of Sojat City grew into the region’s henna market — leaves came in from surrounding farms, were dried and milled, and powder went out to markets across India and, later, the world. “Sojat” became shorthand for quality the way “Champagne” is for wine regions.

The tradition today

Today the same region supplies bridal artists, salons and natural-hair communities worldwide. What has changed is presentation: batch dates, fine sifting and export-grade packaging — what has not is the desert sun doing its work in the leaves.

Read how Sayal Henna carries that history forward.
