Good paste is 90% of a good mehndi session. Here is a simple, reliable method.

You will need

  • 20g body-art quality henna powder (about two heaped tablespoons)
  • ~100ml lukewarm water, plus lemon juice or a little sugar if you like
  • A non-metal bowl and spoon

Method

  1. Sift if needed, then add water slowly, stirring one direction until the paste looks like thick yogurt with no dry pockets.
  2. Cover the bowl and rest 4–8 hours (overnight is ideal) so the dye releases.
  3. Stir, adjust the consistency with a few drops of water, and fill your cone or applicator.
  4. Apply, keep the paste on for 2–6 hours, scrape off — and let the stain deepen over the next 48 hours.

Common mistakes

Using boiling water (it dulls the dye), over-thinning the paste, and rushing the rest period. Body-art quality powder makes the rest easy.
