How Henna Powder Is Made

Sayal Henna - process-triple-sifting

From field to pouch, henna powder passes through five careful stages. Here is what happens at each one.

1. Cultivation

Henna shrubs grow for a few years before their first real harvest. In Sojat’s alkaline soil and hot, dry climate, the leaves build up their natural dye through the summer.

2. Harvesting

Branches are cut or leaves picked by hand when the leaves reach peak maturity — after the monsoon dry cycle in Rajasthan.

3. Drying

Leaves are dried in shade, not direct sun. Sun-drying fades the dye; shade-drying keeps it. This is one of the quiet details that separates premium powder from cheap powder.

4. Milling and sifting

Dried leaves are milled and sifted through fine cloth mesh — often three times — until the powder is silky and free of grit. Body-art grades go one sift further.

5. Packing

Powder is weighed and sealed in moisture-locking pouches, because humidity is henna’s enemy. See our process in pictures.
